Kris Dewitte Exhibition: Carposers and Kissing

Nov 12-Dec 3

Flanders Gallery

Since being officially selected for the 50th anniversary exhibition at the Cannes Film Festival for a photograph of Steve Buscemi holding a camera on the rooftop of the Carlton Hotel, Kris Dewitte has held over twenty solo exhibitions and published seven books, most of them dealing with cinema. Dewitte has always been fascinated by the correlation of cinema and photography and has worked on over 100 film productions as a still photographer shooting portraits of cast members. His latest exhibition will take place at two venues in Osaka. The Suntory Museum will feature Carposers, a series of photos with David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti taken in the boot of a 1982 Mercedes Benz. The tight space allows for some unique angles. The Kissing Project, which focuses on the kiss as the ultimate gesture of affection, adoration and love, will be held at the Flanders Gallery.

Nagasawa – Dove Tende Aurora

Thru Dec 13

The National Museum of Art, Osaka

Hidetoshi Nagasawa, born in 1940, is an internationally known sculptor based in Italy. By exploring the origins of sculpture in Italy, Nagasawa applied the principles of gravity and dynamics to create sculptures with a unique structure by reexamining the fundamental relationships of form and image, time and space, and things visible to the naked eye and things that are not. He expresses his principles poetically at times, but sometimes adopts a more straightforward approach. This exhibition is a retrospective of his work since 1993.

Open: 10am-4:30pm, closed Mon. Admission: ¥850/¥450. Getting there: Keihan Nakanoshima line, Watanabebashi stn/Yotsubashi subway line, Higobashi stn (exit 3).
Tel: 06-6447-4680

Gourmet and Images of Naniwa Culture

thru dec 13

Ashiya City Museum of Art & History

In Japanaese, kuidaore basically translates as “to ruin oneself by overindulgence of food”–or in other words, eat till you drop. Food culture and Osaka go hand-in-hand, and the paintings featured in this exhibition portray stalls and restaurants from the Meiji period, giving a sense of the multilateral scenes that were present in gastronomic culture in Kansai. Viewers have the chance to relive Osaka culture through the art of food.

Open: 10am-4:30pm, closed Mon. Admission: ¥500/¥300/¥200. Getting there: Hanshin Ashiya stn, walk south for 10min. Tel: 0797-38-5432

Klimt, Schiele and Viennese Art at the turn of the century: Masterpieces from Wien Museum

Thru Dec 23

Suntory Museum

At the end of the 19th century, Vienna was stirred by the powerful aspirations arising in a group of artists who objected to conservatism and began searching for a new dimension in art. Leaving the academic world, the Vienna Secessionists led the active exchange among the fields of painting, architecture, design and craft, to help discover a fresh spirit and revitalize the city. Gustav Klimt, one of the best-known secessionists, expressed his fascination with feminine beauty on glittering golden screens that often provoked public slander and insults. Egon Schiele exposed human inner agony with an intense focus on life and death. They were Vienna’s leading artists of the era and continue to captivate people today. In addition to Klimt and Schiele, this exhibition will feature Hans Makart, Carl Moll, Koloman Moser, Max Oppenheimer, Oskar Kokoschka and others, with approximately 120 masterpieces selected from the Vienna Museum Collection.

Open: 10:30am 7pm. Admission: ¥1,300/¥1,000/¥600. Getting there: Subway Chuo line, Osaka-ko stn. Tel: 06-6775-0001
